Achievements (2007-3013)

  • Punjab State has recorded an increase of 100 sq km in its forest cover as per satellite imagary of Forest Survey of India in 2011. This is the highest increase in any State.
  • About 55000 ha forest area closed under the Punjab Land (Preservation) Act, 1900 was denotifed to enable the farmers of the Kandi area to undertake bonafied agriculture and livehood activities.
  • Japan Bank of International Cooperation assisted Punjab Afforestation Project was completed with afforestation of 79576 ha besides infrastructure development. The post project evaluation conducted by Japanese evaluators has given excellent rating to the project.
  • Compensation being provided to farmers in the lieu of their crop damaged or injury to their livestock and human beings caused by wild animals.
  • Forest complex –a 7 storeyed modern green building constructed at Ajitgarh to accommodate all wings of their department.
  • Plantation over an area of 28850 ha was undertaken during the 11th five year plan.
  • 242.54 lakh plants were distributed to the public on subsidized rates for planting in their fields-premises.
  • Bir Talab mini zoo was upgraded to Bathinda Zoo to include a deer safari.

Future Plans

  • 475 quality saplings being raised in nurseries for plantation/ distribution during 2013-14.
  • More proactive steps would be taken to ensure the safety of the wildlife and forests.
